To celebrate Julia Child's birthday, the Balboa Theatre will host a Birthday Cake Bake-Off and Taste-a-thon on Saturday, August 15. Anyone who brings a home-baked birthday cake will get free admission to see Julia & Julia at any Saturday performance.

The cakes will be available for all Balboa patrons to taste and enjoy while we celebrate.

Child was born August 15, 1912. She was a regular visitor to the bay area and actually went to high school at the Branson School in Marin County. In 1981, she founded the educational American Institute of Wine and Food in Napa with vintners Robert Mondavi and Richard Graff to "advance the understanding, appreciation and quality of wine and food."

The Balboa Theatre is thrilled to announce that the Visual Effects Supervisor for Star Trek and many other films will appear after the 4pm and before the 7pm shows of the new hit Star Trek on Sunday, May 17 at the classic neighborhood movie house in San Francisco. He will discuss the making of Star Trek and other aspects of working at Industrial Light & Magic.

Roger Guyett joined ILM in 1994 to work on the groundbreaking computer animation in Casper. He was a principal member of the team that produced over forty minutes of 3D character animation, marking the first time in cinematic history that a leading role was played by an entirely synthetic actor.

In 1995, Guyett led the technical direction of key sequences in Dragonheart, where ILM’s proprietary facial animation software brought Draco the CG dragon to life. As computer graphics supervisor on Twister, he oversaw a team of digital artists that created stunning images of one of nature’s fiercest weather events. Three years later, Guyett was recognized with a British Academy Award (BAFTA) for his innovative work as co-visual effects supervisor on Saving Private Ryan. For his work on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Guyett earned both Oscar and BAFTA nominations and won the Visual Effects Society Award for Best Visual Effects.

Most recently, Guyett was the Visual Effects Supervisor for J.J. Abrams’ eagerly anticipated reboot of the legendary Star Trek franchise to release in May 2009.

Guyett, born and raised in Great Britain, worked in the video and film post-production industry for eight years. He supervised numerous award-winning commercial, television and film projects for clients such as Ridley Scott and Amblin Entertainment.

SF ON SF CONTEST

In the new STAR TREK San Francisco is the home-base of The United Federation of Planets. Basically the UN of the Universe and home-base to Starfleet.

Many science-fiction films have used The City as a backdrop.

We are asking you to send in as many genre titles set in the SF Bay Area or with major scenes about our home as you can. The person with the most correct titles will get a Balboa 2009 VIP pass for two people.

In the case of a tie, a drawing will be held to determine the top winner. Other prizes will be awarded to runner-up contestants.

Contest lists must include your name and contact information. They can be hand delivered or mailed to the Balboa Theatre. The deadline for entries is May 29, 2009
